Ghrainne Mhaol / Grace O' Malley

Born in 1530 as Grainne Ni Mhaille. Grainne was queen of Umaill (Connaght) and a fearsome trader and pirate. Ireland was under English rule and Grainne was a known rebel to the crown. In 1593 she travelled to England to appeal for the release of her 2 sons and brother. Elizabeth 1 agreed on the promise that Grainne ended her rebellions and piracy against England, which she reneged upon. Grainne died in 1603 in her home place on Clare Island.
